Have you heard of the 10/40 window? It is the section of the world where 90% of the unreached people groups live, yet only 1 out of 99 missionaries go there. Angi and I recently wrote a book about how to use social media to reach and influence the world for Christ. The day of the book launch we put on a college student retreat focused on the need to go to the 10/40 window. The Lord used the combination of the book release and world focused retreat to get me thinking of more ways social media can be used to get the gospel to these unreached groups so I decided to experiment. I placed an ad on Facebook for two days pointed solely to the cities in India where the Ansari people live, a group of over 10 million people where there is not one known believer. Since India's people have more mobile phones with access to the Internet than they do toilets, what an opportunity to reach them. The ad was in Urdu, their language, and directed them to GotQuestions.org, an evangelistic website. The article the ad took people to explained who Jesus was and shared the gospel. In 2 days 90 (most likely Ansari) people clicked on the ad and got to read the gospel for the very first time in their language. The most shocking thing is that the cost to reach 90 Ansari people with the gospel was not the cost of a few thousand dollar plane ticket and time learning the language, it was a total of 20-30 minutes and $12, our cap which enabled the ad to run for two days. Imagine how many unreached people groups you could reach with a few hundred dollars!? Imagine if even just a handful of women regularly took steps of faith to steward their resources including Facebook to reach the world for Christ. The opportunity to see the world reached for Jesus in our lifetime is at hand friends. Do you want to try reaching an unreached people group through facebook? Here's how: 1. Pray and ask God to lead you through this whole process. 2. Pick an unreached people group you want to reach by going toJoshuaProject.net 3. Find out what language they speak. 4. Find a evangelistic website or tool in their language. You can do this couple different ways: a. Click on the language directly underneath the language tab from the unreach people group you picked on JoshuaProject.net and then click on the different tabs and explore available resources in that language. b. Google evangelistic websites in the language you are looking for. A good thing to keep in mind when picking a site is if there is enough information on the site to allow for them to keep discovering about Jesus if they are interested. And keep in mind you want a site that clearly shares the gospel and offers some sort of discipleship material if they do surrender their life to Jesus. 5. Once you found the specific article, video or website you want to make an ad out of copy the url and head over to www.facebook.com/advertising and click Create an Ad and sign in. 6. Paste you url where it says Choose a Facebook Destination or Enter url and hit Enter 7. Click Suggest an Ad 8. Click Upload an Image. Pick a eye catching photo even if it isn't really related. You can save as a google image of trendy trees or something. 9. On the facebook ads page scroll down an you'll see where it says Choose your audience. This is the most important part. Go back to Joshua Project to the unreached people group you picked and look at a map of what city the majority of them live. You might have to open www.google.com/maps to help you identify the exact city. Once you've identified the city (or cities) click City under location and then type those cities into the facebook Choose your Audience. 10. Scroll down to where it says, Campaign, Pricing and Schedule. Give the campaign a name (whatever you'd like). 11. Pick your campaign budget. What is your final cost that you are willing to pay? 12. Click the button where it says Cost per Thousand Impressions. 13. Look at the Suggested Bid on the right of your screen and put the minimum amount in the Cost per Thousand Impressions box. 14. Click Place order. Facebook will then keep you updated on the reach and how many people saw the ad and clicked on the ad. Have fun! It might be neat to let people know on facebook what you just did and ask them to be praying for the people the ad is going to get in front of. Laura I appreciate your efforts to reach Jesus among the people. As you said now people use mobile phones more than toilets. Everyone has mobiles and they are connected to social medias 24 hours, so the message we spread through social medias reach people more easily than any other ways.

I've heard from a lot of people who are trying this and they are excited about the results. But from my ad I couldn't figure out how to leave contact info in the ad... not sure I wanted to do that.

Dear Laura, Great Blog and a fantastic idea.. Love what you are doing. I work for yesHEis and we agree that the internet is a huge untapped resource for evangelism. Indeed I call myself an iMissionary. While I work for the International English team (which doesn't focus on the 10/40 window) our site does have other languages that could suit your readers needs. We collect images and videos that talk to a persons "need" and then leads into a gospel presentation. GBU Fee

Thanks so much for posting this and sharing on the Joshua Projects website. God is so awesome and amazing in the way he chooses to use each of us in his plan. I was sitting in church one day and just had a thought based on something the preacher said about reaching the unreached. I thought it would be neat if we could use facebook to aid in the effort. I googled to see if anyone else was doing this and I found this article. I started praying about this and asking God to show me where he would have me post an ad. I started the process on facebook but didn't end up finishing the ad because if I was going to pay to post the ad I felt like I needed to do a decent amount of research on the country I chose to advertise. Because I didn't finish the ad facebook sent me a $50 promotion code to use to encourage me to finish the ad I started! It was if God was telling me to go ahead and get posting where he was leading me. I posted the Jesus film and Got Questions.org in Arabic in Chad and I posted the Jesus film in Hindi in India. It has been less than a day and I have had 31 clicks and 17 likes. The "likes" are the best part because I may see if I can try to start conversations with people across the globe that I never would have the opportunity to meet or share the gospel with. I will repost at the end of the campaign with any updates. I definitely feel like God is using this to reach the unreached and wanted to thank you for sharing. It is so exciting watching God work and truly amazing that he allows us to be a part of it!

Have you heard the song "Revelation Song" that has gone around the world? It was written by a stay at home Mom who lives in my town. God isn't limited to use us, regardless of our season's perceived limitations. :)

I totally understand with 4 kids of my own (and another on the way). I just am overwhelmed sometimes by the privilege by living in this time period with the opportunity to reach the world so easily! Just wow!

Wow! In an age in which Americans are a stumbling block to the Gospel in so many Sunni areas, you have enabled our prayer to reach and touch down. This needs to spread beyond women to challenge the guys to get off video games and into making an eternal difference.

Our church prayer group wants to do this and we have selected a people group which has resources in their language, but we don't know how to have the text of our ad translated into their language (Newar). Any suggestions?

If a group has Christian resources in the language then there's a good chance that there are Christians either in or working with the group who could advise you. In this case I googled and found details at https://theseedcompany.org/languages/new-est-cluster-newar

Thanks for this article. If you are looking for materials in a particular indigenous language, check out www.ScriptureEarth.org which houses Scripture and Scripture resources in over 2300 languages of the world. Click on the country where the people live (or came from in the case of immigrants) and then click on the name of the language. A list of Scripture materials available in that language will appear with links to each resource.
