I'm so glad you are here! I hope during your visit you get a glimpse of God's heart for we become what we are gazing at. Currently I am writing my way through Judges sharing glimpses of God's heart and character for a weekday devotional. To check out the entire series so far head on over the the Judges Devotional. And if you blog, come on over on Friday's for a blog link up. Are you tired of the book of Judges yet? I am, and am not at the same time. I love the new insights the Lord generously has been giving but Judges really is a pretty depressing book. Remember how the Lord waited 40 days till He sent David to the battle lines to face Goliath. And during those 40 days the Israelites got a good hard look at the cowardice hearts they had. Well, Judges feels like 40 days (though it's been much longer) of a good hard look at our desperate need for Jesus. But did you know the book of Ruth is happening at this same time. The redeeming love story of a rich man willing to pay the price for his beloved. I'm sure there were many other beautiful Ruth stories taking place during the time of the Judges so why do you think the Lord left them out of Judges? Without a good shot of reality of our sinfulness apart from Jesus, the cross is not really seen for the greatness that it is. In fact, it's foolishness. It's not until we see our depravity that the grace of God is seen as overwhelmingly beautiful. So here we come to the end of Judges 20 with 1 chapter to go.A battle scene. Basically the Benjamites have gotten pretty cocky and think they are willing the 3rd battle, the Israelite guys take off and lure them away and ambushed them from behind and the Benjaminites didn't even realize how big of trouble they were in until it was too late. When they realized they were defeated they took off for the wilderness and 25,000 Benjaminites were lost that day leaving only 600. On the way home from Israel pursuing them, they killed every living thing and burned down every town they came to. How do you feel about this? I am tempted to feel sorry for these guys until I remember how they raped and killed the Levites wife and that the reason these guys were even fighting was to defend the right of these sickos to do so. And then I see how deeply God cares about this injustice too. What injustice really gets you fired up? The 143-210 million orphans? The 22 million slaves (including sex slaves)? I honestly long for the day when God is going to stand up and say NO MORE! That He is going to come with a sword in defense of the little girls being raped 30 times a day and the orphans with no one to kiss their broken hearts and broken knees when they fall. Jesus will come to make all things right. And yet when all seems lost we'll remember the cost we're resting in, the shadow of the cross. Have you subscribed?
