Facebook Ministry

Revolutions starting in the middle east sparked through Facebook was a eye opener to many of how influencial facebook is as a tool. It provides a unique way for people to unite for a cause, be encouraged, challenged, motivated and moved to action.
Picture
Facebook is having an impact on the world, so what an incredible tool to impact the world for Christ!

I know there are pitfalls to avoid with facebook (like everything in life) but personally, I love facebook. I love how it helps me be relatable to people by having quick access to whats going on in their lives and lets others feel connected to me. Not to mention it is super helpful for people with bad memories! And who doesn't love have a ton of people wish you a Happy Birthday, have a running email and ability to set up appointments quickly.
Picture

I have also found it to be an incredible tool for ministry, useful even to even  me, a mom of three tiny ones, whose only free time is mid-day naptime and late night. I love the freedom to do online ministry on my schedule.

Look what God can do through Facebook...
Meet Tanya

Picture
Tanya is a girl who had been involved with our ministry for awhile (who I met through facebook). She built friendships and would stick around but wasn't ready to trust Jesus with her life. We would chat on facebook every now and then and I would write little bits of encouragement on her wall and invite her and her son over for lunch when I could. I got to share the gospel with her and I know of 2 other people who did as well. She just wasn't ready. We kept praying.

Finally, while chatting on facebook I asked her if she was ready to submit her life to Christ. She typed "yes". So right there, typed out on facebook chat, Tanya received Jesus' forgiveness and surrendered her life to Him. God used facebook to transfer Tanya from the kindgom of death to the kingdom of life. How beautiful!

There are a ton of ways to use facebook as a ministry tool. Here are a few I have experimented with. Feel free to comment with others you have tried or want to try.

Ideas of how to use Facebook to impact eternity.

1. Use your facebook friends as a prayer list

2. Use your status updates strategically. Put up thought-provoking questions about the gospel or things that will lead to the gospel or things that will help people grow in their trust of the Lord. The more people who comment on your update, the higher it is on the feed (giving it better chances of being read by friends of friends-which will help you get outside your own facebook bubble.) So not only is it a way to share your faith, but also give little discipleship (helping someone walk by faith, communicate their faith and multiply their faith) nuggets.

3. Status updates are also a great place to put God's Word which wont return void. It seems everytime I put up a verse, someone says, that was exactly what they needed to hear. God's Word is powerful, the Holy Spirit uses it to speak right to the heart where no one can see.

4. Use it to type out prayers for people in private messages. Or use their wall as a place to honor them (brag about them and how God made them so good at_______.)

5. As you are praying for your friends, ask God to lead you who to begin a spiritual conversation on chat or through facebook messages. After your in a spiritual conversation, try to get to the gospel. (For helpful tools on how to do this, check out my Life of Mission Tab)

6. Use Facebook ads. Austin got back from a sensitive country in the middle east not too long ago. While they were there they put up a facebook ad for 1 day. It pointed to a website they created easily through a free website, weebly (which I just love!) It invited people to email them if they had questions about Christianity. In one day they had 600 visitors and a handful of emails. That happened in a country where less than .007% of the people are Christians. I think that was a great filter to find the seeking students. You can make a facebook ad and target it to specific audiences (even places where the gospel is not accessible). I would recommend using the tool below as a facebook ad.

7. The Story. This is a GREAT free resource that shares the gospel clearly and effectively. All you do is create an account, get the html code and paste wherever you like (websites, blog, facebook, email signatures). It keeps track of your visitors, countries and decisions made. Get your own to put on your blog at View the Story
We are privledged to get to influence people for Christ all over the world right from our dining room table. Wow!

"Therefore my dear sisters, let nothing move you, always give yourself fully to the work of the Lord because you know your labor in the Lord is not in vain." 1 Corinthians 15:58

Will you ask God how He would like to use you through facebook?

I agree! I have started using fb to point people to my daily bible posts on my blog. I try to encourage there... not to be negative. Not to bash people. But you have given so many good examples! Wow, I can't believe a girl was saved on fb. how cool is that??!? Bless you and your ministry :)

This is a great perspective on how to use new media for the Glory of God! Just by listing one's faith on the profile page can make a silent statement to others.

Laura, great post and wonderful challenge! Totally agree...God has been convicting me in the past year of how bold I am in my faith. So many people are watching! What do they see? Do they see Jesus or do they see me? I pray it is Him that they see! I long for the lost to be drawn to Him, to be healed, and to experience His healing touch.
Thanks for this. :) Glad I found you via Women Living Well!
God bless you and your ADORABLE family!
Ashlie

Yes, yes, yes. I love this. God can use Facebook as much as he can use anything else, if we allow him to work through us. I feel the same way about it; it is a ministry and such an open door into people's hearts. Thanks for sharing this.

YES!!!Around Christmas time I felt God calling me to take a complete break from facebook because I was on like 20 games, etc and it was taking away from time with Him and with my children and husband. A few months later I felt God leading me to go back on and that I could use it as a tool to spread the word of His awesome Love. Everyday I post scripture, inspiring/make you think quotes about God. This is my only purpose for using Facebook besides looking a friends photos and having conversation (short and sweet ones still) and reaching out to those who hunger the word of God. It can be used to really bring people to Christ or to see Him in the way that will make them "get it". I love it!

One of my friends introduced me to Facebook several years ago, and I have enjoyed using it ever since. I knew there were a lot of people on Facebook, but was not aware of all your Facebook facts. Thanks for sharing!

Loves this post. For me, I find Facebook to be an easier route to open people up :) I often send personal messages with a youtube link to a Christian Song.. Always think about what my status will be and put up thought provoking ones. When I am having a bad day, I tend to put an encouraging quote.. even if I might want to complain.. I am always reminded that God would rather me be a reflection of Him, and if only a few friends see it on Facebook its awesome!

Thanks for sharing.

Hi - Just came over from Good Morning Girls Link-Up! I really like this. We hear so much of the evils of FB (and there certainly are some); it's a refreshing perspective to look at it as a means for God to reach out to others through us. I know I try to post a lot of inspirational quotes, videos, and news stories that glorify God instead of just a laundry list of my activities. Thanks, again!
