This is the final thoughts for the Living in the Light series. Here are the other articles in the series: Living on Mission Part One {In the Light} Living on Mission Part Two {In the Dark} Living on Mission Part Three {3 Steps To Live in the Light} 4 Ways you May Be Hiding your Light Being a Beacon-3 Actions to be the Light to the World I have learned so much through this look at living on mission in the light! And I doubt God is done showing me all there is to living in the light either. But I wanted to end this series with taking a look at the sun. Time to bust out the sunglasses! "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light. And God saw that the light was god. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day." Genesis 1:1-5 The light was the very first thing that God created. I find that incredibly significant! Humanity might be the most important of His creation because He bear God's image, but we are in need of light to even survive. Why is the sun so important? Because it gives us Vitamin D, which isn’t actually a vitamin but which is actually a prehormone that converts into… ya know, my sciencey students on campus will only shake their heads at me for attempting a science statement. So for Nikki’s sake, we’ll keep it at Vitamin D. Vitamin D is important because it helps us fight off illnesses. Think of the biblical importance! Just like the sun helps not get sick, living in the light helps us from the sickness of sin! Sin leads to death if not for THE Son, right?! Now I want us to look at another passage about a Son that was at the very beginning. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." John 1:1-5 WOW! I mean, really, WOW! May I list the amazing things in this passage? 1. Both are in the first chapter, first 5 verses - I think that's cool 2. Jesus was before time, and everything was made through Him and for Him 3. In Jesus WE find LIFE, and we become light to others 4. The darkness cannot overcome the light, but the light DOES shine through darkness If you are tracking with me through this, track with me to one more verse. "Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12 Dear reader, God's plan from the very get go was for you to live in the light. He is the Light of the world to not only change you from the inside, but to also so you can bring light to the other believers in your life. And even great the privilege is to bring the light to the dark world. Like we saw in Matthew 5 in the last article, you are bright city on a hill - a beacon for the lost to come to find out about Jesus Christ! This is why living in the light is So important!! We not only need this to be healthy individuals in the body of Christ, but so we can ultimately be bringing people to Christ. Dear Jesus, thank you for this amazing study on light! Thank you for bringing me into the light and letting me now walk in the light, as you are in the light. Thank you for the mission you’ve called us all to be a light to the world that’s dying around us! My prayer is that we may all be able to live free from all those things that try to keep us in the dark, so we can be the beacons you’ve called us to be. In your name I pray. I have always loved all the verses about light and dark. We recently moved into an old farm house where the light (sun) passes over from one side to the other every day. There seems to me to be something very wonderful about that. Thank you for linking with Unforced Rhythms!
