TV is a powerful resource given this generation. It is the main influence discipling our nation and potentially the world. But sometimes it's depressing that this incredible tool seems to be used more for evil than for making Jesus known. For years I had spent countless hours praying for God to raise up directors, writers, producers actors etc. who will be willing to enter the entertainment industry for the purpose of glorifying God. A few years ago I sort of gave up praying. It just seemed the tv shows and movie were getting worse, not better. But just as the Lord does, He reminded me that there's hope, that He is moving. A few weeks ago I got an email about a new tv mini-series starting THIS SUNDAY night. Mark Burnett (producer of Survivor, The Voice, Celebrity Apprentice etc.) and his wife Roma Downey (from Touched by an Angel), motivated by widespread Bible illiteracy decided to produce the Bible. They wanted to put on screen what God put in Words so long ago. * Half of all Americans can't name the first five books of the Bible *12% believe Noah's wife was Joan of Arc *1/3 think the Sermon on the Mount was delivered by Billy Graham *And some even believe Sodom and Gomorrah were a married couple. They saw the need to bring relevant, relational storytelling to the masses with excellent production values and a desire to reach the lost, a desire to reach an audience Christian ministries can't. The Lord is so good at re-motivating isn't He! Will you pray with me the Lord would continue to raise up missionaries to go to Hollywood. Ones that will stay strong and humble. And let's pray the Lord uses tv as a way to draw people closer to Him. And will you pray many would tune in on Sunday night and would get to see and be changed by God's grand story. I hope you'll be able to watch The Bible as a family this Sunday on the History channel. And I hope it sparks some great conversation about what the Bible really says and other great things about God. Total side note but interesting thing about the filming: They filmed in Morocco for five months and had to hire a snake wrangler to keep the cast and crew safe. The wrangler would catch all the snakes and keep them off the scene. The one they hired was one of the est in the business, a native Moroccan. On an average day he would catch three or four snakes a day. But when they shot the Crucifixion scene there were more than 47 snakes caught! The wrangler said he had "never seen so many snakes in one place in his entire life." Here's a preview: “I love the passion and enthusiasm that my friends Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have invested in their new History Channel series, The Bible. Rather than a word-for-word documentary, this project combines drama and history in a way that captures the essence and heart of the Gospel and the broader biblical story. I’m convinced that The Bible represents a unique opportunity to convey God’s redemptive message to a broad audience—many of whom may be unfamiliar with the narrative of Scripture. My prayer is that many lives will be impacted not only by the beauty and quality of the production, but by the Truth that lies at the center of the story.” “We feel this is the most important project we have ever undertaken,” said Mark and Roma. “Regardless of one’s belief system, no book has impacted humankind more than the Bible. Its influence on politics, culture, literature, art, music, philanthropy and education is unequaled.” “The Bible is visually stunning and spiritually evocative - I couldn’t stop crying the first time I watched it! This incredibly realistic depiction of the divine love story between our Creator-Redeemer, Jesus Christ, and humanity is a huge gift for both the church and culture at large.” As part of the tv series launch they offered to giveaway a free book and CD based on the series.
