God wants to be known.
He wants to be known by all people in all places in all time periods therefore He revealed Himself long before Scripture came to be that none can say “what about the people who never heard about Jesus”.
Romans 1:20 “For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made.”
Psalm 19:1-4 says,
“The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky proclaims the work of His hands.
Day after day they pour out speech;
night after night they communicate knowledge.
There is no speech; there are no words;
their voice is not heard.
Their messaged has gone out to all the earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.”
So you may be wondering, How? How does the sky proclaim and communicate night after night about God’s character, His glory? How are we supposed to know what God is like by looking around at creation?
Isaiah 40:26 says,
“Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of His great power and strength, not one of them is missing.”
Adam named the animals, but God named the stars. The stars we see in the sky are formed into groups or pictures called constellations. There are 12 main constellations which make up what is called the Zodiac or in Hebrew it’s known as Mazzeroth. This is not horoscopes or astrology. Those are distortions of what God artistically displayed about Himself. Those are schemes of the enemy to take something God made and twist it to make it all about us rather than God.
Here’s what God says about the Zodiac or Mazzeroth in Job (38:31). “Can you fasten the chains of the Pleiades (star cluster in Taurus) or loosen the belt of Orion? Can you lead forth the Mazzeroth in their season…?”
Job is the oldest book in the Bible. So the constellations were known way back then and have been virtually unchanged. Taurus and Ursa Major, for example, appear in cave art.
And the names of the stars have retained their meaning in various languages. For instances, the constellation “Virgo”, meaning “virgin” is referred to as “Bethulah” in Hebrew, “Parthenos” in Greek, “Kanya” in Hindi- all of which mean “virgin”. This shows us a prior knowledge of the names of the stars and constellations before confusion at the tower of Babble.
Let’s look at some of God’s Word and what God says about he stars.
Gen. 15 “He took him outside and said, “Look at the sky and count (Heb. Caphar-recount, celebrate, tell out) the stars, if you are able to count (saphar-recount, tell, relate, speak) them.” Then He said to him, “Your offspring will be that.” (The last word, “numerous” is not in the Hebrew.)
There was something about the stars that God was telling Abram to remember, to recount to give him hope. And the result, “Abram believed the Lord, and He credited it to him as righteousness.” Vs. 6. Abram looked at the sky and put his trust in the story of the stars and it was credited to him as righteousness.
Ok get this. Col. 1:23 says this, “This Gospel has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become a servant of it.”
He had just been talking about in vs 15 and 16 how Jesus is the image of the invisible God and how “everything was created by Him in heaven and on earth, the visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or ruler or authorities-all things have been created through Him, and for Him.”
Then goes on in verse 19-21 saying, “God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him (Jesus!) and through Him to reconcile everything to Himself by making peace through the blood of His cross. Once you were alienated and hostile in your minds, because of your evil action. But now He has reconciled you by His physical body through His death to present you whole, faultless, and blameless before Him.”
So back to verse 23 when Paul says, “This Gospel has been proclaimed in all creation” That is the Gospel, or the message He is talking about. And he is saying it has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven. Under heaven! That is the Greek word is Ouranos which means the visible sky, the starry heaven, the atmosphere. And under is Hupo which means, under. Paul calls himself a servant of the story of the stars. A servant to tell and share the same Gospel that the stars tell.
So want to know this story? Want to know what the ancients knew? We want to tell you because we serve a God who wants to be known. And not just known by us, but by all.
Today in our time period we have an incredible opportunity which may soon close to tell people all over the world about Jesus. Leah and I are going to be like Paul and tell the story of the stars so that many may come to see and hear and know about the God that wants to be known. To know about how they can put their faith in Christ and have His righteousness credited to them.
But we can’t do it alone. We only have so much of a social media reach. So will you partner with us to tell God’s story by sharing the videos? We will have other videos at TheStoryoftheStars.com walking you through how you can do it. And will you pray that many come to put their faith in Christ through this step of faith we are taking?
